Looking for a Counting Worksheet for Foundation?

Learning to count from 1 to 10 is one of the fundamental numeracy skills taught in the first year of school. Once students grasp this key sequence for single-digit numbers, they can transfer these skills to two-digit numbers and beyond.

This set of 3 alien-themed worksheets has been designed by our teacher team to help your students count small collections of objects. Each page features a group of quirky (but friendly!) aliens that will captivate your students’ attention. Each sheet asks the students to count a specific feature of the aliens:

• Worksheet 1 – Count the number of eyes on each alien.
• Worksheet 2 – Count the number of legs on each alien.
• Worksheet 3 – Count the number of spots on each alien.

These worksheets are an excellent resource for helping students strengthen their counting skills. By focusing on different features like eyes, legs and spots, students get to practise counting in a variety of contexts, reinforcing their understanding of numbers and quantities.

Use These Counting Worksheets in Your Lessons

Looking for some inspiration as to how you might include these counting worksheets in your early years numeracy lessons? Here’s a suggestion from one of our experienced teachers:

• Introduction to Counting – Use the first worksheet as a whole-class warm-up activity. Project the worksheet on your interactive whiteboard, then have the students count the eyes on each alien out aloud. This helps familiarise students with the sequence of counting in ones starting from zero.
• Independent Practice – Hand out the remaining worksheets for students to complete on their own. As they work through counting the legs and spots on the aliens, circulate the room to provide support and answer any questions. Encourage the students to point to each feature as they are counting to assist with one-to-one correspondence.
• Student Support – If you notice students who are struggling with the activity, provide manipulatives such as counters or small blocks. Students can then build their own collections by counting out the number of counters or blocks that correspond to the number of eyes, legs or spots on each alien.
• Student Extension – For students who finish early or need more of a challenge, consider extension activities like having them create their own alien drawings with a specific number of eyes, legs and spots. They can then exchange worksheets with classmates for additional counting practice.
