Teach Comprehension with a Fact or Opinion Activity

Understanding the difference between facts and opinions has always been an important skill, and in the age of social media and fake news, it is more important than ever!

This fact or opinion activity has been designed by our expert teacher team to help your students practise distinguishing between facts and opinions. It contains 18 fact statements and 18 opinion statements. Students are required to match the fact statements and opinion statements that belong together. For example:

Flowers need sunlight to grow. (Fact)
Everyone loves to receive flowers. (Opinion)

This resource contains:

  • Instruction page
  • 36 matching cards
  • Recording sheet
  • Answer key

This resource downloads as a full-colour PDF or editable Google Slides file. Perfect for whole-class lessons, small group work or independent practice, this resource will spark discussion and deepen students’ understanding of fact and opinion statements.

How to Use This Fact or Opinion Activity

Here’s a quick rundown on how students can use this fact or opinion matching activity:

  1. Lay all the cards face-up on the table.
  2. Pick up a card and read it. Work out:
    a) The topic of the card
    b) Whether it is a fact or opinion
  3. Look for the matching card for that topic. For example, if you have found an opinion about giraffes, look for the card that has a fact about giraffes. When you find the matching card, record the two card numbers for that topic on the recording sheet.
  4. Continue making matches by following this process.
  5. Check your answers using the answer key.

For added challenge, students can create their own fact and opinion pairs after completing the activity.
