Splat! – 4 Types of Sentences Games for Year 1-2!

First graders are just beginning to build their writing skills, and mastering the 4 types of sentences is the first step. To keep young learners engaged, it’s important to provide 4 types of sentences games that make learning fun and interactive. Through play, students get the repeated practise they need to recognise and use statements, commands, questions, and exclamations correctly. This hands-on card game offers a simple and effective way to reinforce sentence types while keeping students engaged and excited!

SPLAT Sentence Types – Year 1 Grammar Practice

Make your Year 1 Grammar Practice exciting with SPLAT!, a fun and engaging sentence identification card game. This printable game grammar helps students practise identifying statements, commands, questions, and exclamations.

How to Play SPLAT!:

  • Shuffle the sentence cards and place them face down in the middle of the playing area.
  • One player draws a card, reads the sentence aloud, and names the type of sentence (statement, command, question, or exclamation).
  • If they answer correctly, they keep the card. If they answer incorrectly, the card goes back to the bottom of the pile.
  • If a SPLAT! card is drawn, the player must return all of their collected cards to the pile.
  • The player with the most cards at the end of the game wins!

This interactive activity is perfect for small groups, literacy centres, or whole-class play.
