Teach Sentence Types With Printable Sentence Strips

Teaching young learners about sentence types and punctuation marks is critical to early writing instruction. Our Printable Sentence Strips resource is designed to provide hands-on practise with identifying and punctuating different kinds of sentences.

Using the included sentence examples, your beginning writers will gain confidence in recognising and using statements, commands, exclamations, and questions correctly.

Identifying the 4 Sentence Types – Activity Pack

This Sentence Types Activity Pack includes a variety of printable sentence strips designed to help students learn the four sentence types: statements, commands, exclamations, and questions.

The set includes sentence strips with and without punctuation, allowing for multiple sorting and matching activities. You can use these sentence strips for whole-class discussions, small-group instruction, or partner work. We have also included a handy list of suggested activities that you can complete using the included sentence strips, such as:

  • Around the World: Have students sit in a circle with one student standing behind another. Show students standing a sentence. The first to name the sentence type moves around the world to the next student sitting in the circle. That student will then stand while the other sits. Continue until all students have a turn.
  • Four Corners: Hang the sentence-type posters in each corner of the room. Choose a sentence strip and read it aloud. Students will decide on the sentence type and move to that corner of the room.
  • Speed Matching Game: Set a timer and challenge students to sort the strips into the correct sentence types as quickly as possible. This adds an element of competition and excitement to the activity.

With this 4 Sentence Types Activity Pack, students will get plenty of practise distinguishing between different sentence types while reinforcing their understanding of proper end punctuation.
