Make learning ‘pop’ with this volume hands on activity — ‘The Popcorn Challenge!’
Our Volume Hands On Activity Engages Students in Learning
Challenge your students with a volume hands-on activity that combines math, engineering, and real-world problem-solving! In ‘The Popcorn Challenge,’ students must design and build a container that holds exactly 313 pieces of popcorn, using only limited materials. With lab sheets guiding them through brainstorming, sketching, testing and reflecting, students will engage in the engineering design process while applying their understanding of volume.
Included in this resource:
- Student instructions
- Prediction prompts
- Sketch spaces
- Reflection questions
This volume hands on activity is perfect for collaborative learning, STEM challenges, or maths stations!
Prepare This Fun Volume Activity for Students
Ready to challenge your students with this fun volume activity? Here are preparation instructions to ensure you and your students are ready to rock this lesson!
- Download this volume hands on activity and print a copy of the student directions and lab sheets for each student.
- Pop enough popcorn for each group or student to use. Each group will need exactly 313 pieces for testing their container, plus 10 extra pieces for estimating while designing.
- Gather the additional supplies needed for each group: paper, tape, a stapler and a small cup to hold the 10 pieces of popcorn used for estimation.
- Ready the stations. Place students into small groups and give them all the supplies above except for the 313 pieces of popcorn. Each group must craft their containers before being given the bulk of the popcorn to test their product.
- Use the student instructions to explain the activity and let the learning begin!
