This poster highlights rules when using quotation marks and gives examples for each rule.
- Use single quotation marks around direct speech.
- Do not use any quotation marks for indirect speech.
- Use double quotation marks around quotes within direct speech.
- Use a comma before directly quoting someone else.
- If the quote is not a full sentence, do not use a comma before the first quotation mark.
- Use single quotation marks for slang terms.
Note: Some teachers/countries teach the opposite to these rules, that is, that double quotation marks should be used for direct speech. An alternative version of the poster that outlines these rules is available from the drop-down menu above.
