Hands On Volume Activities Engage Students in Learning

Make volume come to life with hands on volume activities like this exciting Popcorn Challenge! In this engaging STEM-based lesson, students take on the role of engineers as they design and construct a popcorn container that holds exactly 313 pieces of popcorn—no more, no less! Using only paper, tape, and staples, students will apply their knowledge of volume, estimation, and problem-solving to create the perfect design. With student directions and lab sheets to guide them through the engineering process, this activity is perfect for math and science integration. Get ready for creativity, critical thinking, and plenty of popcorn fun!

Included in this resource:

  • Student instructions
  • Prediction prompts

  • Reflection questions

Hands on volume activities like this one are great for small groups, STEM stations, and collaborative learning.

Prepare This Volume Activity for Students

Ready to challenge your students with this volume activity? Here are preparation instructions to ensure you and your students are ready to rock this lesson!

  1. Download the “Hands On Volume Activities: Popcorn Challenge” and print a copy of the student directions and lab sheets for each student.
  2. Pop enough popcorn for each group or student to use. Each group will need exactly 313 pieces for testing their container, plus 10 extra pieces for estimating while designing.
  3. Gather the additional supplies needed for each group: paper, tape, a stapler, and a small cup to hold the 10 pieces of popcorn used for estimation.
  4. Ready the stations. Place students into small groups and give them all the supplies above except for the 313 pieces of popcorn. Each group must craft their containers before being given the bulk of the popcorn to test their product.
  5. Use the student instructions to explain the activity and let the learning begin!
