Introduce Prepositions with a Preposition Anchor Chart Pack

Prepositions… They may be small, but they are an essential part of speech that can help our students extend their sentences from the simple to the more complex.

This prepositions anchor chart pack includes three engaging posters that clearly explain prepositions of place, time and direction, helping students understand their use with ease. Each prepositions chart features bright visuals and simple explanations, making these essential grammar concepts more accessible for young learners. They provide a great reference point for your students to consult at any time during the school day.

Need a refresher on these three types of prepositions? Here’s a quick review:

  • Prepositions of Place – Prepositions of place tell us where something is located in relation to something else.
  • Prepositions of Time – Prepositions of time tell us when something is happening. The most common are ‘at’, ‘in’ and ‘on’.
  • Prepositions of Direction – Prepositions of direction tell us where something is moving in relation to something else.

This resource is available as a full-color PDF or editable Google Slides file. If your school has limited color printing, we recommend printing in greyscale on colored paper. You may even wish to enlarge the posters so that they really pop when placed on your classroom bulletin board!

Use This Prepositions Chart Pack in Your Grammar Lessons

While this prepositions chart pack makes a great classroom display, it can be used in many other ways in your lessons, too! Here are a few ideas from our teacher team:

  1. Introduction to Prepositions – Start the lesson by displaying the three anchor charts and discussing the different types of prepositions (place, time and direction). Use real-life examples from the classroom to illustrate their usage.
  2. Name the Preposition – Have students write a sentence that includes a preposition on a strip of paper, then place the strips into a bag. Pull a sentence out and read it. Have students use the prepositions anchor chart pack to help them identify what the preposition in the sentence is, and which type of preposition it is.
  3. What’s My Scene? – Project an image of a particular scene (e.g. children playing at a playground). Choose a preposition from one of the posters, then have students create a sentence using that preposition to describe what they see in the image.
