Creative Activities Using Preposition Picture Examples
This prepositional pictures matching game can be used in a variety of ways to reinforce positional vocabulary. Read on for some specific activity ideas from our experienced teacher team!
- Whole-Class Matching Game – Turn the matching game into a lively whole-class activity by laying all the cards face down in a grid on the floor. One at a time, students take turns flipping over two cards, trying to find a matching position word and its corresponding image. If they find a match, they keep the pair. If not, they flip the cards back over and let the next student have a turn. This game not only reinforces memory and concentration skills but also encourages peer learning as students discuss position words together.
- Real-World Preposition Discussions – Use the cards as conversation starters to help students connect position words to their daily experiences. Display a card and ask students to describe a real-world situation where they have seen that preposition in action. For example, if the card shows “under,” students might say, “My cat likes to hide under the table.” This activity encourages verbal expression, critical thinking and a deeper understanding of spatial concepts in real-life contexts.
- Preposition Charades – Give each student or small group one of the prepositions images and challenge them to act out the preposition without using words while their classmates guess what it is. For example, if a student has the word “between,” they might stand between two chairs. This kinesthetic approach helps students internalize spatial vocabulary through movement and play.
