What Is a Consonant Digraph?
We'll start with a definition of consonant digraph to make sure we are all on the same page!
A consonant digraph is made up of two consonants that work together to produce a single sound, such as "ch" or "sh."
These pairs of letters can appear at the beginning of words, in the middle or even at the end.
Consonant Digraph vs Consonant Blend — What's the Difference?
Although consonant digraphs and blends are both made up of consonants (surprise, surprise!), these two phonics terms refer to two very different things! So what's the difference?
- A consonant digraph brings multiple letters together to create one sound.
- The individual letters of a consonant blend each retain their own sound when pronounced.
